My current obsession - John Mayer. After seeing him play live in Melbourne during his Battle Studies tour, I started scouring the net for any live recordings I could find. There is just so much more depth and character to live versions, something you just cannot get from the studio albums. He sings from the heart and you can hear the intensity in every strum, every breath. Songs such as Gravity, In Your Atmosphere and Stop This Train benefit greatly from freedom the stage brings - caught in the moment, John can change up the lyrics or music, incorporate solos, and improvise. The songs are never identical, but it’s the imperfections that make the songs perfect.
